Despite the armed conflicts in Kachin State entering its 13th year on June 9th, the number of people fleeing to safety continues to rise daily.
The resurgent conflict between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the SAC, which began on June 9, 2011, has persisted, prompting prayer ceremonies in IDP camps within KIO-controlled areas.
According to UNHCR’s survey, from June 2011 to May 2024, approximately 160,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in Kachin State. The situation worsened in March 2024, with 66,931 additional people fleeing due to intensified clashes along the Myitkyina-Waingmaw road, bringing the total number of displaced individuals to over 160,000.
In recognition of the 13th anniversary of the civil war on June 9, 2024, prayer ceremonies were held in IDP camps, including the Je Yang camp in the KIO-controlled area.
Over time, aid and support for the displaced have dwindled, leaving many struggling for basic necessities. The latest wave of evacuees from the renewed clashes on March 7, 2024, urgently needs food, potable water, and shelter.
The conflict between the KIA/KPDF joint forces and the SAC forces in Kachin State remains intense.
