In PaThein Town of the Irrawady Region and HkanTi Town of the Sagaing Region, the district governors under the State Administrative Council (SAC) have distributed registration forms to young civilians for military service, as reported by the recipients.
The distribution of the military service forms commenced on March 13th, and the forms are labeled as “Forms to be filled in by those who will be registered for military service.”
Additionally, townships in the Yangon Region have been compiling lists of eligible young individuals for military service since early March. However, a young resident from Myitkyina indicated that there has been no mention of sending application forms for military service in Kachin State.
It is important to note that the conscription law was enacted on February 10, 2024, in Myanmar. According to this law, beginning in April, five thousand young individuals will be conscripted into military service.
In accordance with the provisions set forth in the Conscription Law, individuals who fail to comply with the mandatory military service requirement may face legal consequences, including potential imprisonment for a period of up to five years.
Following the enactment of the Conscription Law, there have been instances where members of the SAC forces have engaged in the unauthorized detention of young individuals within the vicinity. These individuals have been subjected to coercive measures, including demands for monetary ransoms, as a condition for their release.
