In late November, gold entrepreneurs reportedly forced the EPC to adjust the Utility poles along the Ma Mon Kai Road by 30,000,000 kyats per pole to expand their business site and move them toward the road.

“The EPC was requested to relocate the utility poles an additional 10 feet away from the roadway. In total, over 20 poles were shifted at a cost of 300 million kyats for each pole. In addition, gold miners from the area collaborated to facilitate this relocation. The gold mine extended across the road towards Inn Dawgyi Lake, prompting them to gradually excavate the ground and reposition the utility poles to enable gold mining activities along the roadside as well,” as a Ma Mon Kai villager.

The road, which previously measured nearly 40 feet in width, has become narrower due to the relocation of utility poles to the roadway, resulting in increased difficulty for two vehicles to pass each other.

Residents reported that last year, gold miners cleared trees along the Ma Mon Kai Road and excavated for gold by erecting tin shelters over the roadway. This year, they are planning to relocate utility poles onto the road and extend their digging operations an additional 10 feet towards the road.

Local residents report that approximately 70% of the agricultural land in Ma Mon Kai village has been converted into gold mining sites, as gold investors are offering between 3,500 and 5,000 million kyats for each acre of farmland.
