As reported by participants, local residents from Gwi Hka Village held a demonstration demanding employment opportunities for grassroots individuals at 8:00 AM on April 27th in Hpakant, Kachin State.
According to the participants, the armed forces controlling Gwi Hka Village have prohibited jade mining in the area for approximately three years, leading locals to request permission to work with local jade miners.

A Gwi Hka Village resident stated, "Jade mining has been banned since late 2021, leaving no employment for small-scale local jade miners. Additionally, while large excavator operators are allowed to mine jade after paying significant taxes, small-scale miners are barred, making it inconvenient for them to travel to Hpakant for work. Furthermore, current conditions in Hpakant have made jade mining challenging. Therefore, we organized this event to address our livelihood concerns."
Since 2021, the armed forces have enforced a ban on jade mining activities, yet some entrepreneurs continue mining using large excavators. Consequently, grassroots workers from Gwi Hka Village are advocating for employment opportunities.
