The Myitkyina-Putao highway has been closed for over a month, resulting in a complete shortage of gasoline in Putao Township, Kachin State, as reported by local residents.
One resident reported that "The Zay Yar Min gas station briefly sold gasoline at 8,000 kyats per liter bottle until yesterday morning, but customers were limited to one bottle per motorbike. As of this morning, all gas stations in Putao have closed due to fuel depletion."
The ongoing intense clashes between two armed groups have further exacerbated the situation, as roads leading to Putao Township remain closed.
"The abundance of gold blocks in Putao has led to increased demand for diesel, which was depleted first. Gasoline remained available at gas stations for approximately a month, but the current fuel shortage has forced all stations to close" said the above local.
The local residents reported that during the extended closure of the Putao-Myitkyina highway, which lasted over a month, the price of fuel ranged from 5,000 to 8,000 kyats per liter for motorcycles. However, as of today, fuel supplies have been entirely depleted.
Due to the ongoing highway closure, the residents of Putao are unable to transport essential goods, including fuel. This situation has raised concerns about their livelihoods, particularly as the planting season approaches and they are unable to engage in agricultural activities.
The Myitkyina-Putao highway has been closed since March 7 due to offensive actions by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). The closure has persisted for over a month, and tensions between the armed groups remain high.
