Following extensive flooding in Myitkyina, Kachin State, nearly all gas stations had shut down, leaving locals grappling with soaring fuel prices and severe shortages.

One resident lamented, "Those in urgent need of fuel faced difficulties as some individuals exploited the scarcity. Upon any station reopening, queues formed with resellers doubling prices. Gas stations themselves also inflated prices, disproportionately affecting locals in need."

Since June, fuel shortages plagued Myitkyina as fewer trucks entered from Kan Pai Ti at the Chinese border. Subsequently, flooding on July 1st submerged and closed most stations.

During the crisis, gasoline prices surged from 8,000 kyat to 10,000 kyat per liter, with roadside vendors charging up to 18,000 kyat per liter water bottle of gasoline.

However, since June 9, prices have gradually reduced at some stations, now ranging between 4,600 kyat to 4,800 kyat per liter.

A fuel trader attributed ongoing price abnormalities to numerous fuel tankers being halted at the NanSiAung checkpoint on the Kachin-Sagaing border and the Kan Pai Ti checkpoint on the Chinese border.
