The price of fuel in Putao is once again on the rise due to the reopening of all the gold mining areas that had been suspended for more than three months.
A fuel seller from Putao reported that a liter of gasoline is currently being sold for 4,5000 kyats, and that all the gas stations have run out of fuel and closed again. This sudden increase in fuel prices is attributed to the gold blocks bidding on all of the fuel that has come into Putao.
At present, fuel is being sold at 45,000 kyats per liter in Putao, and most of the gas stations are closed. The gold blocks have bid on all of the fuel that has come into Putao, making it difficult for locals to obtain sufficient fuel.
As reported by a local resident, the vehicles that reached SumPraBum have already passed, including six fuel trucks. However, these trucks did not stop in the town and proceeded directly to the gold mining areas, resulting in a shortage of fuel in the town.
Due to the heavy rainfall, the Putao-Myitkyina highway sustained damages, resulting in its closure. Additionally, landslides and mountain collapses occurred in the Hkawng Lan Hpu area, causing travel difficulties for the local population.
Consequently, commodity prices, including fuel, have increased. Furthermore, concerns have arisen among the local residents regarding a potential fuel shortage in the town due to the gold blocks bidding on fuel in Putao.
It is worth noting that the gold mine areas, which had been suspended for over three months, resumed operations with excessive gold mining immediately after the reopening of the Putao road in late June. As a result, the prices of goods in the region have not decreased and continue to surge due to the renewed activity of the gold blocks.
Presently, the Putao-Hkawng Lan Hpu road and the route to Myitkyina are experiencing ongoing damage from water erosion and landslides. This situation has exacerbated the challenges faced by the local residents of the Putao district, who are now dealing with the renewed road closures.
