As drug users in Myitkyina, Kachin State, increase, thieves and bandits are more openly committing knife-wielding robberies on the city's main roads, according to residents of Myitkyina.

On February 16th, at approximately 7 PM, a 20-year-old individual was robbed of his motorcycle by two assailants armed with a knife. The incident occurred while he was engaged in a phone conversation at the intersection of Sanpya Road, where he had briefly halted. The perpetrators were riding a 125cc motorcycle and approached from Dukahtawng Ward (10).

An eyewitness said, "We were exiting the nearby billiard hall when a boy shouted that his bicycle had been stolen. As he shouted, the two men who had taken the motorbike were in the process of starting its engine. Residents from the adjacent house were also calling out that a motorbike had been robbed. The sudden screams startled and frightened us. While we remained there, the two thieves had already engaged the lever on the bike and sped off."

The two individuals involved in the motorcycle robbery were described as tall and large men, who reportedly brandished a knife at the victim's neck. The victim suffered two knife wounds, each measuring 8 cm in length, to his neck. At the time of the incident, the entire neighborhood was experiencing a power outage.

“The aforementioned road has become notorious for frequent robberies. Last year, individuals in an Alphard vehicle took a motorcycle from young people who came from the Dukahtawng area and also arrested the young individuals. One of the motorcycles was able to evade capture. At the Sanpya downhill intersection, the sounds of individuals crying out after being robbed of their motorcycles and phones can often be heard. Recently, with the electricity outages, criminals have been actively seeking out victims to target,” according to a local resident.

Local residents report that following the military coup, incidents of theft, robbery, and stabbings have become increasingly common in Myitkyina. The individuals committing these robberies typically operate in groups and are often armed with weapons, including knives and sticks, particularly in the less-trafficked streets of the city.
