It has come to our attention that the residents of MaLiYang SanPya Village and HkangBu Village in the MaLiZup region, situated approximately 28 miles north of Myitkyina, are facing significant challenges in their restoration efforts following a severe flood.

Approximately 40 residences in MaLiYang Village were heavily impacted by the river flooding that occurred in late June and early July, resulting in extensive damage. Furthermore, it is reported that nearly the entire village of HkangBu was submerged during the flooding.

An elder from MaLiYang Village provided insights into the extent of the damage, stating, “We estimate that around 40 houses were affected by the flooding. Several of these houses sustained severe structural damage, with some even having their foundations compromised. As a result, many families are currently displaced and in need of temporary shelter. While some houses were salvageable after cleanup efforts, essential structures such as cattle barns, pigsties, toilets, and fences were swept away by the floodwaters. Additionally, there were reports of livestock, including cows, being carried away by the river currents.”

Furthermore, the village of HkangBu, situated in the upper region of MaLiYang Village, was also extensively inundated. Notably, HkangBu village is located on the outskirts of Myitkyina City and has a population exceeding one hundred residents.

An esteemed elder from the village provided additional information, stating that HkangBu village was severely impacted by the flood, with nearly the entire village submerged. The aftermath of the receding water revealed significant damage, resulting in hardships for almost every family in the village.

In MaLiYang Village, more than two houses were entirely destroyed by the flood. Consequently, the affected residents have sought temporary shelter with close relatives or in the village’s Traditional and Culture office.

MaLiYang San Pya Village is a small settlement with approximately 140 residents, situated near Myit-Sone (TangHpre). It is also home to individuals from DawngPan and AungJaYang villages, who relocated due to the MyitSone project in 2010.
