Authorities have successfully dispatched a wild elephant that had been causing havoc in Mular Di village, Putao, with the operation completed today, April 21.
The aggressive pachyderm had been present in the Mular Di vicinity since April 16, during which time it fatally attacked four local residents. An additional victim succumbed to shock-induced loss of consciousness. The elephant's rampage also resulted in the destruction of five residential structures.
This incident reflects an ongoing issue in Putao region where wild elephants periodically encroach upon human habitats, causing property damage and posing threats to personal safety. Similar circumstances led to the elimination of another wild elephant along the Myitkyina-Putao thoroughfare in the previous year.
While the immediate threat has been addressed through the elimination of this particular elephant, officials advise continued vigilance as other wild elephants potentially remain active in adjacent woodland areas.
Concurrent with these events, reports indicate that during the temporary relocation of villagers to Mular Shi Di village as a precautionary measure, several residences were unlawfully entered and domestic possessions removed.
Following the successful resolution of the elephant situation, displaced community members have initiated their return. However, rehabilitation efforts will be necessary for dwellings that sustained damage during the incident.
