Residents of Myitkyina have reported that ongoing construction of pavilions for the upcoming Thingyan water festival has been halted and is now being dismantled.

The decision comes in the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck on March 28, resulting in widespread casualties and significant damage to homes and buildings. As a result, preparations for the city's water-splashing pavilions and traditional street celebrations have been suspended and removed, according to a local resident.

As of now, the devastating earthquake has claimed over 3,600 lives, with more than 400 still missing and over 6,000 injured across Myanmar.
