One month has passed since over 1,000 civilians from Sumprabum Township were forced to evacuate due to escalating conflicts between two forces. With the farming season approaching its end, concerns have arisen regarding the livelihoods of these evacuees.

"Typically, the majority of Sumprabum locals engage in agricultural activities, particularly paddy cultivation during this time of the year. However, due to the ongoing armed clashes, individuals are currently residing in the forest, hindering their ability to plant paddy despite the impending rainy season. This situation raises significant uncertainties about their sustenance. Furthermore, the Sumprabum road remains closed, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the evacuees" said a local resident.

Annually, the onset of summer prompts Sumprabum residents to engage in farming and plantation activities as their primary source of income. However, this year, their livelihoods are jeopardized due to the forced evacuation resulting from the armed conflicts.

Additionally, despite seeking refuge in the forest for safety reasons, social assistance organizations have been unable to provide support due to the closure of the Myitkyina-Putao road.

The evacuee reported, "The children and adults are struggling in the forest due to ongoing armed clashes, hindering their ability to retrieve food from their homes. Additionally, the transportation of rice from Myitkyina is prohibited. We are concerning about the potential food shortage and starvation if the situation persists. Furthermore, the continuous rainfall in the forest has resulted in numerous cases of illness among children and adults. Essential supplies such as medical aid, polythene sheets, and clothing are urgently required."

The evacuees have constructed makeshift huts at various locations within the forest. Currently, there are over 1,000 evacuees from Sumprabum Township residing in the forest, and they are in dire need of assistance.

The armed conflict between the SAC and the KIA/KPDF joint forces remains tense, with the Militia forces under the SAC regularly sending reinforcements from Putao Town to Sumprabum Township.
