In reference to the concerns of the Putao residents, there is a growing apprehension that the incessant heavy rainfall in the region may result in severe flooding, leading to the destruction of farmland and paddies.
A farmer from MaChanBaw expressed his worries, stating that the rising waters of the MaliHka River and various creeks during late June caused extensive damage to farms and roads, which remain unrepaired due to the persistent rainfall. Although there was a brief respite for a few days in early July, the continuous downpour has caused the water levels to rise once again, posing a significant threat to the agricultural lands along the river and creeks.
The local residents have reported that the heavy rainfall commenced on July 7th, causing the water level of the MaliHka River to surge. Consequently, there is a heightened concern that the rising waters may erode and destroy the farmlands situated along the river and creeks.
In Kachin State, including Myitkyina, river flooding has been reported in the majority of townships during the previous week. Additionally, torrential rains in the Putao region have resulted in landslides, road damage, and bridge collapses. Furthermore, the heavy rain and widespread flooding have caused significant damage to local residents’ farmlands.
Despite the ongoing rains, the water level of the MaLiHka River is once again rising. Although it is the agricultural season for the local population, the floods continue to pose challenges.
It is worth noting that the floods in early July caused damage to roads and bridges on the Myitkyina-Putao highway, resulting in more than two weeks of road closures due to landslides and mountain collapses caused by the heavy rains.
