Clashes broke out this morning around 9 a.m. between the State Administration Council (SAC) and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) near Tang Hpre Village in upper Myitkyina, Kachin State.
"This morning around 9, we heard fighting started near Gwi Htaw area. It didn't last very long though, and the road has already reopened," a Myitkyina resident told Pajau Media.
The fighting occurred after SAC troops, consisting of about 20 soldiers, launched an offensive in the area since around April 25.
"I think the SAC column had about 20 troops. The SAC checkpoint and KIA outpost are quite close - less than a mile apart I believe," said a traveler familiar with the area.
Similar clashes also occurred yesterday morning, April 27, leading to temporary closure of the Myitkyina-Putao highway.
"We were coming down from Putao yesterday. They only allowed vehicles heading down to pass, not those going up. So some vehicles had to turn back toward Myitkyina. I don't know if the road has reopened today," said a traveler returning from Putao.
Although the Tang Hpre checkpoint was temporarily closed due to the fighting, it resumed normal operations by midday today.
