China's Response to Artillery Shells Landing on its Border

On the morning of March 27, there was a clash between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA/ KIO) and the SAC forces near Mai Ja Yang town. According to local residents, the SAC’s Zin Lum military base camp used heavy artillery, resulting in two artillery shells landing and exploding on the Chinese side of the border.


In response to this incident, China issued a statement expressing its strong concern and urging the Myanmar authorities to strictly adhere to the relevant agreements between the two countries. China emphasized the need to cease all heavy artillery fire on the Chinese side and implement effective measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.


Based on China’s statement, "On March 27, 2024, an unfortunate incident occurred involving an exchange of fire between the Myanmar National Defense Force and the Kachin Independence Army near the Sino-Myanmar border. As a result, two artillery shells landed within the territory of Lala Village, Zhangfeng Town, Longchuan County, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. One of the shells landed approximately 330 meters away from the Sino-Myanmar border stake No. 46, while the impact point of the other projectile was located 500 meters away from the Sino-Myanmar border No. 46 boundary stake No. 1. The shock wave from the impact created a crater with a diameter of 1.4 meters."


According to the residents of Mai Ja Yang, the heavy artillery fired from the SAC’s Zin Lum military base camp exploded twice on the Chinese side of the border, with reports indicating four explosions in the vicinity of Mai Ja Yang Town.


The statement also includes as following: In light of this serious incident, China has lodged a formal protest with Myanmar. We strongly urge the Myanmar authorities to take this matter with the utmost seriousness and adhere strictly to the relevant agreements between our two countries. It is imperative that Myanmar immediately cease all cross-border exchanges of fire and implement effective measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents. We expect Myanmar to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of Chinese personnel and property in the border region, thereby contributing to the maintenance of peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border.
