The border trade gates at Mai Ja Yang, Laiza and Loije in Kachin State have been reopened by the Chinese side, allowing the free transportation of goods without restrictions, according to local sources.
The border gates had been closed for trade by the Chinese government for four months. However, they were reopened on March 28, enabling the transport of consumer and commercial goods without limitations, a resident from Mai Ja Yang reported.
“There are no longer any restrictions on goods as before. Everything can now be transported freely. Vehicles are crossing the border every day,” he said.
According to locals, the reopening of the border trade gates may have resulted from repeated petitions submitted by residents of the Chinese border region to the Chinese central government in Beijing.
Previously, while the border gates were closed and goods from China were restricted, agricultural products from Kachin State, such as bananas, sugarcane, and watermelons, continued to be exported to China without interruption.
