Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan of Kachin State declared on April 30th that the State Administration Council (SAC) would provide fuel to farmers in Putao Town at regular prices.
A farmer from Lay Yin Kwin Ward mentioned, "They said they would supply (1,000) barrels of fuel this week, and they plan to transport it by plane. The military flight YX arrived once yesterday and again this morning."
Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan arrived in Putao Town on April 30th, announcing plans to address the fuel shortage affecting local farmers by airlifting fuel and offering it at a discounted rate.
Continuing from the resident's account, the Chief Minister outlined that fuel distribution would be based on land acreage, prompting residents to queue at the administration office since morning to obtain invoices.
"The exact fuel price remains unclear. It's stated that fuel will be sold after submitting farm invoices to Ward Administrators. Consequently, many people have gathered at the town's ward administration offices, but fuel distribution to locals has not commenced yet," the resident added.
However, a Putao Town resident expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the officials' plan, citing logistical challenges.
"It's impractical to transport fuel by flight to all farmers across Putao District. I believe this is more for political optics. Most locals are engaged in farming in rural areas. Even within the city, fuel distribution hasn't been fully realized, making it challenging to reach rural villages," they remarked.
Currently, fuel prices in Putao Town have soared to nearly 100,000 kyats per gallon, exacerbating farming difficulties amid fuel scarcity.
Putao locals reported that the Myitkyina-Putao Highway has remained closed for two months due to skirmishes, compounding challenges with fuel shortages, limited supplies, and soaring commodity prices.
