It is reported that while the river water has receded in the Myitkyina neighborhoods affected by the floods, locals still lack access to clean well water. The polluted water has resulted in a prevalence of diarrhea and skin diseases among the residents.

A young man from MaLiYang Ward stated, “The community lacks usable water, compelling them to rely on unpurified well water for cooking, leading to diarrhea outbreaks. We possess two water pumps and are actively endeavoring to cleanse the neighborhood’s wells. Additionally, KBC church volunteers are contributing to the well-cleaning efforts with their water pumps.”

Post-flood restoration efforts are being undertaken by the local residents themselves, with some households facing challenges due to the absence of generators and difficulties in well cleaning.

Among the flooded neighborhoods, RamPu Ward, SiTaPru Ward, LelKone Ward, and KyatPaungGyan Ward experienced the most severe river flooding, resulting in significant damage and waste accumulation.

Consequently, the majority of households have been unable to clean their wells, resulting in a prevalence of diarrhea and skin diseases due to the exclusive use of contaminated well water.

Furthermore, the local population is seeking assistance from the government or civil society organizations to support families who are unable to afford necessary resources.

Following the flood in Myitkyina, the restoration process is ongoing, with certain neighborhoods still experiencing stagnant floodwater and mud, hindering travel and access to clean well water, which is essential for cooking and drinking purposes for the local residents.

The city of Myitkyina has been extensively flooded since early July. Notably, the river water began to recede on the 3rd of July, however, silt water remains in RamPu Ward and LelKone Ward.
