The SumPiYang evacuees who have relocated from the conflict zones are planning to establish a self-sustaining educational institution within the SumPiYang IDP camp in Putao. However, they are currently facing challenges in securing essential school supplies.

Two temporary dormitories have been constructed using bamboo and rain shelter sheets to facilitate the commencement of schooling for students residing in the IDP camp. The intention is to provide education up to the middle school level. However, the necessary school supplies, including desks, chairs, and blackboards, have yet to be acquired. Despite these obstacles, the school is scheduled to open next week.

“The school is set to open next week, but unfortunately, the required school supplies are not yet in place. We are essentially starting from scratch, which presents numerous difficulties. Even the school supplies procured by the school committee have not arrived due to road closures. Time is of the essence, and we are exerting every effort to ensure the school’s opening,” stated an evacuee from the SumPiYang IDP camp in an interview with Pajau Media.

As of June 1st, all primary and secondary schools have resumed operations nationwide. However, children residing in the SumPiYang IDP camps in Putao face challenges in terms of classroom availability, school supplies, and a shortage of teachers. Consequently, the school remains closed to this day.

Despite receiving permission from the KIO Education Department to reopen, practical obstacles hinder the school’s immediate reopening. Currently, securing teachers proves challenging as the school’s reopening relies on parents’ self-preparation efforts.

An evacuee from the IDP camp further elaborates, “We are preparing to reopen the school as permitted by the KIO Education Headquarters. However, they do not manage the school or provide any information regarding school supplies. Additionally, they plan to operate the school with teachers who have passed the matriculation exam and those appointed by the parents.”

It is estimated that over 200 students will attend school in the SumPiYang IDP camps. These students are evacuees who fled the conflict zone since May of last year.

Over 200 students, who are war refugees, will be attending school in the Swampian Refugee Camp. These students fled the war to a safe location in May.
