Residents report that following the internet disruption in Kachin State, Starlink Wifi has gained significant popularity in Myitkyina, resulting in the monitoring of online transactions and subsequent arrests.
Following the internet shutdown in Kachin State, numerous WiFi internet establishments have emerged in Myitkyina, and Starlink WiFi devices are now being extensively marketed online.
A local resident from Myitkyina stated, "My friends operate an online business involving Starlink Wifi. Following the disruption of internet services, the demand for Starlink Wifi devices surged, prompting them to import devices from China. Regrettably, the individuals who placed the orders were police officers. Upon shipment, the devices were seized. They were required to pay a fee to retrieve them. Currently, numerous Starlink Wifi devices are under confiscation."
In recent days, several internet shops lacking ownership and failing to pay fees have faced device seizures, leading to the arrest of individuals involved. Furthermore, these individuals were compelled to pay ransoms amounting to tens or even hundreds of thousands of kyats. Following an escalation of conflict in Kachin State, the State Administration Council (SAC) implemented a shutdown of telephone and internet services. Consequently, the use of Starlink, IP Star, and Knet Wi-Fi devices has surged in Kachin State.
Internet cafes previously imposed charges ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 kyats per hour; however, these rates have now been significantly lowered to between 3,000 and 5,000 kyats per hour. Additionally, certain restaurants have begun to provide complimentary internet services.
