A statement issued by the Data for Myanmar group on December 3rd indicates that the number of individuals detained for expressing criticism of the State Administration Council (SAC) online and on social media during the coup d'état has risen annually. From December 2021 to December 2024, nearly 1,900 individuals have been arrested.

It has also been reported that the individuals taken into custody were detained for expressing criticism of the SAC via Facebook and other online platforms. Furthermore, it is suggested that some of those apprehended may have been involved in communication with and offering assistance to the armed forces opposing the coup.

The SAC consistently observes attacks and criticisms directed at them via online platforms. Additionally, 'Data for Myanmar' reported that the frequency of arrests has risen as a result of halting pedestrians and inspecting their mobile devices.

It was also reported that between the start of 2024 and October, the total number of individuals apprehended for expressing criticism of the State Administration Council through online channels has reached 350. Since the coup d'état in 2021, the highest number of arrests has occurred in the Yangon and Mandalay regions, amounting to a cumulative total of 896 individuals.

Of those apprehended during the coup, 36 percent were female. In July 2022, the SAC declared that anti-terrorism legislation and measures would be implemented in response to criticism and propaganda disseminated via social media. Additionally, it has been reported that SAC forces continue to conduct further interrogations of individuals in the provinces and regions still under their jurisdiction.
