It is reported that after the shortage of fish in Myitkyina, Kachin State, there are more people who catch fish from the river and sell in the market. In addition, the people who catch fish with electrical devices in the river are also increasing during these days.
As said by a local resident from one of the branch wards of Myo Thit Gyi quarter, “In the past, there used to be people who sell fish from the river, creeks and streams at the people’s houses in the neighborhoods of every ward in Myitkyina. But it has stopped since last few years. However, after the shortage of fish in the region, the people who sell fish by catching them from the river are increasing. There are 4 or 5 people who come and sell fish at our home every morning.”
In addition, as stated by a Myitkyina local resident, the people who catch fish with electrical devices are also increasing within these days.
“People are catching fish with electrical devices at islet and along the Irrawaddy River. There used to be action taken over catching fish with the electrical devices in the previous year. But, because of the rising prices of the fish in the market, the people who catch fish with the electrical devices are also increasing. If the shortage of fish would continue for long periods in the region, there will be more people who catch fish with electrical devices,” said the above person.
At the present, a viss of river fish have cost 40,000 kyats and the iced-fish which are shipping with an aircraft have cost 50,000 kyats in Myitkyina where the fish are currently scarced. On the other hand, there are not as much people who sell fish in the market during these days.
It is also known that most of the goods and fish are scarced since August 17th in Myitkyina after the closure of the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway.
According to the local residents, even though there are some fish which are shipped with the aircraft, the prices are skyrocketed and the daily paid people and less incomes people can’t able to buy it. As a result, the people who consume and who sell fish from the river have increased.
Moreover, it is also reported that the dealers in the region are planned to hire a plane to ship fish, paans and other green groceries from Mandalay to Myitkyina.
