A residence located in Aung Tha Pyay Ward, Mohnyin Township, Kachin State, experienced two burglaries and was subjected to a ransom demand of 50 million kyats within the span of one week.
The incident occurred on January 31 at 7 p.m. when a group of about 20 armed men broke into a house and robbed it of money and jewelry. They returned a second time on February 4 and robbed 5,000,000 kyats.
It has been reported that a total of 20 robbers were involved in the incident. The homeowners were unable to meet the demand of 500 million kyats set by the robbers, resulting in the robbers seizing all the funds the homeowners had acquired from the sale of chickens and pigs, in addition to all their jewelry and gold. The robbery occurred during the hours of 7 PM to 9 PM, according to an individual familiar with the victim's family.
The assailants compelled the residents to kneel and lower their heads, insisting on a payment of 500 million kyats. They issued threats of death should the payment not be made and confiscated all of the victims' jewelry and cash. Additionally, they were set to remit another 50 million kyats on February 4.
A group of robbers arrived in two vehicles, equipped with firearms. One of the assailants claimed to be a police officer from Mawhan. The homeowner subsequently went to the police station to report the incident; however, the police responded by asking, "Are you involved in drug dealing? That is likely the reason they are at your residence to conduct an investigation," according to the source.
Residents report that phone connections in Mohnyin have been disrupted, hindering the ability to request assistance during emergencies and enabling criminals to execute robberies with relative ease.
In mid-2024, reports indicate that a jade dealer's residence in Okkyin Ward was also subjected to a robbery.
