A disturbance occurred at the Myitkyina Prison facility on April 18th in Myitkyina Town, Kachin State, resulting in the unfortunate loss of life and injuries among the inmates. The prison authorities took action to quell the unrest, employing necessary measures to restore order.
It is reported that a riot occurred within the prison facility, resulting in casualties among the inmates. The incident was sparked by the fact that certain prisoners, despite being included in the list of individuals granted amnesty as part of the SAC’s Myanmar New Year’s Day initiative, were not permitted to leave the premises. Consequently, the affected individuals initiated the riot as a form of protest.
As reported by a local resident in the vicinity of Myitkyina Prison, "A disturbance occurred where inmates were heard chanting a phrase commonly associated with protests. In response, prison guards and authorities took immediate action to quell the situation by employing firearms."
A local resident said "When I passed by the prison in the evening, the situation appeared to have stabilized. Approximately four to five prisoners were seen with their faces covered, seated on the floor, and undergoing interrogation."
Furthermore, it is reported that the deceased and injured prisoners were transported to the Myitkyina General Hospital in three prison vehicles, and heightened security measures have been implemented within the hospital premises.
On April 17th, RFA reported that the State Administration Council (SAC) granted amnesty to 42 prisoners from Myitkyina Prison as part of the Myanmar New Year’s Day celebrations.
Among those released was the former Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) Reverend Dr. Hkalam Samson. He was initially released on April 17th but was subsequently re-detained by the SAC at approximately 10:00 PM on the same day.
