A 33-year-old individual residing in the Gai Daw IDP camp located in Mansi Township, Bhamo District, lost his life due to being struck by a landmine, while another individual sustained a severe back injury.
“At approximately 2 PM, we responded to the sound of a landmine explosion by conducting a search of the incident site. During our investigation, we discovered both the injured individual and a deceased person located alongside the road. The injured person had been walking at the front, resulting in severe injuries to his back. The deceased has lost his left leg as a result of a landmine explosion. I think he stepped on the landmine with his left leg,” said the eyewitness.
The individual who passed away has been identified as U A Shaine, a 33-year-old Lisu man residing in the Gai Daw IDP camp, and he was a father to one child. Meanwhile, the man who sustained severe injuries, U Hkawng Lum, is presently receiving medical care at a hospital.
On February 15, a man lost his life after stepping on a landmine while en route from the IDP camp to his hometown of Maji Gung village, where he intended to sell wood chips. The incident occurred near an abandoned military camp.
The location of the incident is the SAC’s military camp in the Maji Gung, which was ultimately seized by the KIA joint forces on March 3, 2024. The detonated landmines may be remnants of those previously deployed by the SAC. Furthermore, numerous unexploded landmines continue to pose a threat in the area.
The family members of the deceased became aware of U A Shaine on February 16 due to issues with phone communication, and according to local reports, the body was buried in Maji Gung village on February 17.
