Three-year-old child sustained injuries when a heavy artillery shell struck a residence, resulting from indiscriminate firing by the SAC troops stationed at the university campus in Mohnyin town, despite the absence of any armed conflict.

The event took place at approximately 11:00 a.m. on January 11, the day following Kachin Independence Day, when a powerful artillery shell detonated on a residence housing a displaced family.

The child's grandmother escaped the conflict in NantMun and secured a rental property in Alawi Kone. This residence was occupied by families who had been displaced. During a visit to his grandmother from Hopin, accompanied by his parents, the child sustained injuries when a shell struck the house. The shell impacted the building with a single blast. The house was situated adjacent to the road and housed over ten residents. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, according to a relative of the child.

The SAC discharged a 60mm weapon. Furthermore, the ammunition was confiscated by the SAC at 2:00 PM on that day.

Residents have indicated that the SAC has been indiscriminately using heavy weaponry since January 2, prior to Kachin Independence Day, in the town of Mohnyin.

Families residing in residences affected by artillery fire are relocating to different regions out of fear. Additionally, last week, four residents sustained injuries when a landmine, placed by the SAC near Htan Thabin village, detonated.
